Enable ClearType text

Enable ClearType screen on my HTC Touch Pro (text in Norwegian)

Choosing the right fonts for your mobile applications have a great influence on the application look & feel. All Windows Mobile  6 devices gives you the option to enable ClearType. On most devices it is disabled by default. ClearType is a technology developed by Microsoft that improves the readability of text on LCD screens. Quick and Easy explained it is smoothing the edges on the fonts. You can read more about ClearType at Microsoft Typography.

I will show you a quick tutorial on how to enable ClearType on your Windows Mobile 6 device:

  1. Open Start menu
  2. Click Settings
  3. Chose the System tab
  4. Click Screen
  5. Chose the ClearType tab
  6. Select Enable ClearType
  7. Click OK

Finally the summer has arrived and vacation time is closing in. During the summer and especially during my vacation I will spend as little time in front of the PC as possible, but I still want to be able to access the most important services. Luckily the amount of mobile applications have exploded the last years and you can find an application for almost everything these days. You also find a lot of creative not so useful but quite interesting applications. tweeted about one of these not so useful but fun applications earlier today:

IntoMobile: Mobile app tips you when to have a restroom break during movies

I will list the applications I have installed on my HTC Touch Pro that I will be using this summer as a desktop/laptop replacement. As you can see from the list below the most important for me this summer is to be able to check/send e-mails and to follow/participate in my social networks on the net.

htc_touch_pro_bugsMy HTC Touch Pro has started tearing on my patience. I’ve had this phone since early February and I have experienced too many issues/bugs for this period. This is very sad because I really like the phone; the look, the feel, functionality and usability. But simple software bugs/issues makes this phone hard to like.

I was very positive when I found that they had released a firmware update (earlier post about updating HTC Touch Pro firmware) and I thought that this would solve my issues. It did but… it also introduced new issues :(

I’m now running on the latest firmware (at least the latest that I have found on the official HTC support pages). Below I list the issues I find very irritating now:

  • The key lock doesn’t work anymore. When I press the “hangup” soft key for a while the screen just blinks and is back to normal. Before the firmware update this would enable the key lock/screen lock.
  • The new sliding functionality for reacting on incoming calls are also nice but some times it is impossible to actually slide it to the left or right (resulting in unanswered calls).
  • The white light flashing once in a while to indicate new actions that you need to respond to is flashing even if I have no new SMS or unanswered calls.
  • When I have started writing a SMS and decides to slide out the keyboard the SMS is often lost and the main menu is displayed.

htc_touch_proThis firmware update was released 16th February 2009 so it’s not very new but it solves many of the issues I have had with my HTC Touch Pro. It’s quite easy to do this update and it can be downloaded from the HTC official support site. Just follow the instructions on this page. You need the serial number to download this firmware upgrade, this is located under the battery.

What issues does this firmware update solve? It is listed 5 specific issues on the download page that will be solved by updating to this firmware version.

1. The display of TouchFLO 3D sometimes may appear cracked.
2. When taking a picture, the auto focus function may malfunction in some circumstances.
3. In some circumstances, the preview screen will become black after taking picture.
4. In some circumstances, the device may hang while loading TouchFLO 3D.
5. When hanging up a phone call, there may be a delay in the display response.

I have experienced issue 1, 4 and 5 on my phone, but after updating to this firmware version I have not been troubled any more :) and I really hope that it will stay this way. Continue reading »

htc_wrench2Today I got some good tips on how to tweak the performance on my HTC Touch Pro (earlier post about my experiences with HTC Touch Pro). Some of the functions on the phone have been quite slow and sluggish, especially the home screen and the TouchFLO 3D system. My phone was due for some tweaking…

I started with downloading the Advanced Configuration Tool, version 3.3.  After installing the CAB file on your device it can be accessed from Start –> Programs –> Advanced Config. From this application you can do a lot of useful changes on your phone and also some not so useful but very cool changes :) Why don’t set the phone to mute ring tone from incoming calls when flipping it face down…

I did two changes to make the phone more responsive:

1. Open Advanced Config –> Performances and change File system cache size to 8MB.

I have now been using my HTC Touch Pro for a good month and will share some of my experiences with this mobile. I have only had Sony Ericsson and Nokia before so I was a bit skeptical of switching to a Windows Mobile driven phone.

When I got the phone I liked the way it looked and the way it felt. The size is just about right in my opinion, it’s a bit thick but that was expected since this phone have a slide-out 5-row QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard it selves is good to type with and after a little practice I was writing sms and e-mails at a decent speed.

With the TouchFLO 3D system the home screen and the most used functions (contacts, sms, e-mail, calendar etc.) are very easy to use and navigate to. For the rest of the functions you need to open the well known start menu to access them (post about boosting the performance on TouchFLO 3D system).
